Hearst Museum object titled Black and white negative, accession number 15-32146, described as 4” x 5” Negative. Three or four lions. One climbs a tree, one sits in the grass, and the last one or two stand behind the tree. Hoefler's original description: "Until these photos were taken I thought like most people that lions could not climb trees. They do not make a practice of it, but if there is any reason for doing so, can get up much faster and easier than any man. When the negro boys with us saw this they shuddered to think of the many times in the past they climbed trees to escape the king of beasts.

Hoefler's original description: "Jaipur State, Rajputana, India. A long flight of stone steps leads to the Singh Pol or Lion Gate, and turning a corner, the visitor shortly enters a room where for many centuries a daily sacrifice has been made to the Goddess of Destruction, Durga. According to first-hand information supplied Paul L. Hoefler in Amber, it appears that about twelve hundred years ago the Priests of Amber dedicated a temple by decapitating a human being, and then continued the practice each day thereafter, as a sacrifice to the Goddess, Durga. Later on, the people complained to the King and he ordered a buffalo to be killed instead. Now that buffalo are very scarce hereabouts, goats have been substituted and each day one of these animals is placed in the square shown in the photograph, where a temple attendant beheads it with the huge knife shown leaning against the blood-spattered walls." Image depicts a baby zebra found in Tanganyika (Tanzania) by the Colorado African Expedition. Hoefler's original description: "Baby zebra. One day while driving over the veldt in Tanganyika (Tanzania) on the way to our camp Simba, a large herd of zebra crossed the road in front of us and when we came to the place and the dust had settled there stood this tiny stripped baby of the plains. It was puzzled and when we stopped the truck it came up to us so we took it to camp and for some time it managed to get along with us, but one day it heard the call of the wild and left."

Hoefler's original description: "An old man in Udaipur told Hoefler the story of Prince Khurram who appeared poorly dressed in the bazaars of the city and feeling homesick, sold his signet ring to pay some musicians to play songs for him. The goldsmith recognized the ring and brought it to the attention of a noble at court who in turn informed the Maharana. Prince Khurram had fled to Udaipur to seek refuge from his father the Emperor Jehangir. So it came about that the Prince, afterwards the famous Emperor Shah Jahan, was made at home in this beautiful Island Palace called Jag Mandir in the center of Pichola Lake."
