Hearst Museum object titled Banner, accession number 5-15133, described as Yardgoods. Hide shape. Printed cotton. Design includes portrait, inscription "EL HADJI DIORI HAMANI" and "REPUBLIQUE DU NIGER," 2 lines of Arabic writing, armoral emblems in both upper corners. Color: yellow, white, grey and black on burgundy ground with abstract fur design, trim around edges. Length 115 centimeters, width 80 centimeters (upper end). From Niger (unspecified). Context of use: Collector Kate Delos cut the textile into its present shape and used it for decoration in her own house. Backing put on by Delos, removed at museum. This "Diori Hamani cloth" is an example of a Niger "motif cloth." Diori Hamani was the first president of Niger after independence declared in 1960.
