The inro (a) is a tiny, square wood case of two pieces. Simple decoration of branch in sprinkled gold lacquer, w/ inlaid mother-of-pearl 'blossom' on one side, and two blossoms on the other side. Red lacquer signature at one end. Light coat of lacquer on interior. Hidden cord guides. Thin braided grey cord. Netsuke (b) carved of ivory representing a lean dog, front paws upon a human skull. Dark inlaid eyes. Hole thru middle; ie prob. is an ojime, not netsuke. Ojime (c) a red coral (?) bead. L. (a) 4cm.; (b) 2.5 cm.; (c) Dia. 1.4 cm.

Decoration in gold sprinkled lacquer and black unpolished lacquer (hana-nuri). One side shows two thatched buildings depicted in light sprinkled gold on the black surface, with heavier gold lines for detail. Stream in foreground, rock with small rectabgles of gold foil inlay (okibarame), and willow trees, in slight relief: (hira-maki-e). - in the background. Reverse side shows stream, black pine trees, and mountains in the background. Much of the ground has the inlaid rectabgles of gold. Plain surfaces in dull even sprinkled gold, (fundame). Interior: Nashiji = coarse sprinkles of gold on black ground covered by red tinted transparent lacquer. (b) Netsuke: wood carving representing abalone with two small shells on top forming cord hole. One side has intaglio relief of a robed bearded man w/ floppy hat, holding a gold handled fly whisk* w/ a silver-like brush. The robes are represented by simple stylized lines deeply incised. Tiny 5 character inscription to one side. Brown metal loop on the other side, w/ short loop of orange silk cord. The disk is white silver-like metal, polished on one side and dull on the other. Dia. 3.3cm. Part of the inscription might read "Minjo" name of late 19th c. metal worker.

According to the donor's catalog: "Netsuke in old ivory of a grotto backed by a denoted and decorating tree. Within - a man is seated in strength and command. Clad in a sweeping robe - his left arm - raised - and the right hand caressing the back [untranscribable] dragon - who languishes with his head on the lap of the mighty man. Bashiko (Ma Hsi Wang) - a sennin and legendary Chinese physician who lived from 2697 to 2597 B.C. at the time of Huang Ti. He is shown performing operation on the ailing dragon - which he followed by a draught of liquorice. Sometimes he is shown carried into the clouds on the back of his grateful patient. It is a profound Netsuke of strength and archaic mysticism. Bashiko."
