: Hearst Museum object titled Bag with raw material, museum number 9-23031a,b, described as a - Highly pliable shoulder bag, called "seoi-bukuro" in Japanese. Rectangular base is 11" x 3" but has been partially collapsed from storage conditions prior to accession. Tightly and intricately woven using thin, twisted sedge; paired cords form vertical "warps" while "wefts" consist of two cords passed over each other using a technique known as twining. These twined cords are stacked together to form horizontal bands of irregular width. Base consists of a set of three cords horizontally passed over and under a stationary warp of paired cords. Rim of bag is netted to create a drawstring function, and the thicker cord running through these loops is attached at the bag's base to create carrying straps. Gift of Shina-san. length - 16.5", width - 12.5", thickness - 2", base depth - 3" b - Raw material of the same kind (Oshima sedge, or "kan suge" in Japanese) used in the construction of 9-23031a. length - 13", width - 12", thickness - 1.5
