Hearst Museum object titled Bowl basket, accession number 1-28597, described as Twined, with incurved rim, concave bottom.  Tag: "Klamath R. Tribes Att." Per Ralph Shanks:  Globular twined basket bowl. The basket has a crossed warp starting knot, very indented.  The base has no overlay.  The warp material is possibly hazel or willow.  The background weft is conifer root.  The weft overlay is beargrass and maidenhair fern.  At the starting knot there is 4 weft rows of three strands twining.  After that three inches of plain twining, followed by 3 weft rows of three strand twining.  After that there is plain twining until the rim where there is 1weft row of three strand twining followed by two weft rows of plain twining.  The design includes a horizontal band of maidenhair fern with vertical lines through it at the base and at the rim.  The primary design is a band of maidenhair fern with alternating black and tan triangles.  The basket has an exterior workface with a rightward work direction. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The overlay is only on the outside.  The rim is trimmed, and is unraveling. The basket is from Northwest California.  There is a hair woven into the basket.

Per Ralph Shanks:  Twined basket bowl, probably made for sale. Crossed warp starting knot.  The warp material is probably hazel.  The weft material is conifer root.  The weft design overlay is maidenhair fern and beargrass.  Starting after the starting knot there is .25 inch of three strand twining, followed by 1.5 inches of plain twining, followed by one weft row of three strand twining, followed by .5 inch of plain twining, followed by .5 inch of parallel openwork, followed by .75 inch of plain twining, followed by .5 inch of parallel openwork, followed by .75 inch of plain twining, followed by .5 inch of parallel openwork, followed by the rim which has two weft rows of plain twining and is reinforced with a rod and wrapped beargrass.  The main design is diagonal lines of maidenhair fern.  The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The basket has a single-sided overlay with the design on the exterior.  The workface is on the exterior.  The basket is from Northwestern California.

Per Ralph Shanks:  Globular twined basket bowl "fancy basket".  Crossed warp starting knot.  Overlay primarily on the outside, with some on the interior.  The warp material is possibly willow or hazel.  The weft is conifer root.  The weft overlay design is beargrass and red- dyed woodwardia fern.  At the starting knot there is 3/4 inches of three strand twining, after that 2 inches of plain twining, after that one weft row of three strand twining, switching to plain twining until the rim, were there are two weft rows of three strand twining.  The main design is a horizontal band of triangles followed by a band of diamonds followed by another band of triangles.  Four weft rows below the rim there is are two red weft rows.  On the base there is a speckled beargrass overlay.  On the interior overlay designs there are two bands of alternating tan and red triangles.  The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist with an exterior workface.  Based on the materials and techniques this is a Northwest California basket, possibly Whilkut based on the interior overlay designs.  There is a hair woven in the basket, located towards the top row of triangles.
