Hearst Museum object titled Tapestry, accession number 9-11974, described as Weaving; wool Kashmir coverlet or “throw” in “twill tapestry” weave with designs in varicolored wool; floral and “pinecone” designs; white center ground; quilted; green silk lining; 1.41 meter x 1 meter. Probably used to cover furniture; was originally part if shawl; stamp on specimen thought to be abbreviations for “Custom’s Office, People’s republic, Orenburg, 1845.” [__________]. The body of the shawl is of a style of the 1840’s, and a stamp marks its entry into Russia as 1845. It was cut and quilted, for reuse as a cover of some kind, and the new borders--of a diagonal design---looks to be Persian.
