Image Missing: Hearst Museum object titled Box, accession number 7-1a,b, described as (a) Oval wooden box, dated 1831; a “Svepta” box; incised with wavy lines around border, and rosettes. [symbols] on bottom. (b) lid. Made by the “Svep” technique: long, thin, flexible strips of wood were bent around a base, then fastened; overlapping ends were stitched together with birch roots. The woods used were birch, oak, beech, spruce, and fir. “Svepta” boxes commonly had ingenious snap-on lids and were decorated by burning, painting, or carving.
