Hearst Museum object titled Plaster cast, accession number 21-28, described as Cast of relief; The Three Graces. From a marble in the Vatican, found near St. John Lateran, 1769. New: left lower corner of plate, nose and right forearm of figure to right, small parts of feet of other two. Conjectured to be the antique copy of a sculpture by Sokrates of Athens. Fragment of other copies have been found at Athens. Also, location of the original relief on the Akropolis, see Bohn’s Propylaen, page 25. It was about 50 percent larger every way than the present copy. Another one from Grimani Collection disappeared in the Roman art trade. Friederichs-Wolters 118.

New: both feet, the right hand and a flute, parts of the left hand, very correct restoration. also the horns and ears of the antique head, of which Friederichs-Wolters 1508 questions the pertinence. “This charming little statue presents the rare spectacle of a female Pan, more delicately and nobly conceived, to be sure, than a male goat-legged Pan was ever made.” the Albani copy doubtless reproduces the original size of the work; for it would gain nothing by enlargement. the original was no older that the Alexandrian age. it was doubtless intended for a garden of for a rustic environment. there is a pretty example at Pompeii of a garden enlivened with small satyrs.

Hearst Museum object titled Statue (reproduction), accession number 21-29, described as Winner of the girls’ footrace at Olympia. The restorer appears to have supposed the subject surprised. The palm branch on the stump indicates an athletic victory. It is an addition by the antique copyist of the early Greek bronze statue. So, doubtless, is the round plate under the girl’s right foot. She is running. A girls’ race was held at Olympia in honor of Hera. Winners were allowed to erect a statue. The original marble stands in the Gabinetto della Venere in the Vatican Museum. Belonged to the Barberini family. Sold it to Clement XIV. New: both arms from the middle of the humeri. Rayet, Monuments du l’art antique I 17 3 gives a Dodona statuette of a girl racer. Pausanias describes the racers’ dress as follows: V 16, 2: “They race with their hair loose. Their tunics reach a trifle short of their knees. And they bare the right shoulder and breast. The winners get an olive wreath and a share of the cow that has been sacrificed to Hera.” Fifth Century B.C.
