Twined, brown geometric designs with dark brown horizontal lines within. (a) Basket. 3 strand parallel twining at rim, rim damaged. (b) Lid. 2 loops top center.  Tag "Kl. R. Tr. Att.".  There is a swastika in ink on the bottom of the lid and on the interior of the basket. Per Ralph Shanks:  Twined storage shaped basket with lid, probably made for sale.  Crossed warp starting knot.  The warp material is probably hazel possibly willow. The wefts are conifer root.  The weft overlay is maidenhair and red dyed woodwardia designs with a background of beargrass.  On the lid there is a handle made of something like conifer root over a commercial cloth.  On the main basket (a) at the starting knot there is 1.5 inches of three strand twining.  After that plain twining continues 3 inches to where there are three weft rows of three strand twining.  Plain twining continues up to the rim where there are several rows of diagonal twining followed by one row of plain twining at the rim.  The main design is geometric zigzags with dark brown horizontal lines within.  At the rim there is a horizontal band of triangles.  The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The workface is on the exterior, with a rightward work direction. The overlay is single sided on the exterior with some design coming through to the interior.  The lid (b) has a crossed warp start with three strand twining for 1 inch followed by plain twining until 1 inches from the rim, where there is one row of three strand twining, followed by plain twining to the rim.  All of the other techniques are the same as the main basket.  The basket is from Northwestern California.

The following description is for A): slightly indented crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is probably hazel or willow. The weft material is conifer root. The weft overlay design is in beargrass. Starting at the starting knot, there is ⅓ inch of three strand twining, followed by 1 1/4 inch of plain twining, followed by four weft rows of three strand twining, followed by plain twining to the rim. The rim is trimmed. The lid B) has the same materials and techniques, with the exception of the twining which is from the starting knot: 0.5 inch of three strand twining, followed by plain twining to the rim. The handle on the lid is made of beargrass, over cordage. The main design includes on A) a horizontal zigzag band outlined in triangles. The overlay is single-sided, with the design on the exterior. Both baskets have a rightward work direction and an up to the right slant of weft twist. The basket is from Northwestern California.

The following description is for A): Indented crossed warp starting knot.  The warp material is probably hazel. The weft material is conifer root.  The weft overlay design background is in beargrass, with maidenhair fern and red-dyed woodwardia designs.  Starting at the starting knot, there is 2/3 inch of three strand twining, followed by 1 1/4 inch of plain twining, followed by two weft rows of three strand twining, followed by plain twining to a 1/2 inch from the rim, followed by 4 weft rows of diagonal twining, followed by one weft row of plain twining. The rim is trimmed.  The lid  B), has an overlay of beargrass and maidenhair fern.  It has the same weaving techniques, with the exception of the twining which is from the starting knot:  .5 inch of three strand twining, followed by 2 inches of plain twining, followed by one row of three strand twining, followed by plain twining to the rim.  The handle on the lid is made of patterned blue and white cotton cloth wrapped with beargrass.  The main design on A) is a horizontal band of off-set stacked diamonds.  The overlay is single-sided, with the design on the exterior.  Both baskets have a rightward work direction and an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The basket is from Northwestern California.

At the base of the bowl there is 1/2 inch of three strand twining, followed by 1/2 inch of plain twining, followed by one weft row of three strand twining, after which plain twining continues to .5 inch from the rim, where there is one weft row of lattice twining.  Plain twining continues to the rim.  The rim is trimmed.  The lid, starting at the knob, has three strand twining until the overlay begins, where plain twining continues until .5 inch from the rim, where there is one weft row of lattice twining.  Plain twining continues after that until the rim which is trimmed.   The design on the main basket is horizontal curvilinear lines with undulations.  The lid has stacked triangles.  The basket as an up to the right slant of weft twist, an exterior workface, and a rightward work direction.  The overlay is on the exterior.  The basket is from Northwestern California.
