Hearst Museum object titled Bowl basket, accession number 1-70211, described as Coiled, oval shape. Eagle, butterfly, etc., design. Tag "Mission Indians Hemet[?], Calif. Hewitt, L.A. Lr. [?] Mail North Hollywood. Eagle. Oval Over [next side] scrap of paper in bottom of basket no doubt applies to basket". Per Ralph Shanks: Coiled oval basket bowl. Bundle foundation. The wefts are orange, tan, and black dyed juncus. On the base and on some of the designs there is a lighter weft material that is probably willow but could be sumac. The design is two eagles, two quail, two moths, and two butterflies. There are two dark bands of juncus, one two rows below the rim and one at the base. The basket has an oval starting knot. The basket has an exterior workface with a rightward work direction. The weft fag ends are clipped. The rim is plain wrapped with a tapered coil ending. Due to the clipped fag ends and use of willow the basket could be Western Chemehuevi or Cahuilla.
