Hearst Museum object titled Bead, accession number 9-12511, described as Ojime (pl.), string of 15 carved ivory pieces in shapes of various animals of the zodiac. Includes one boar with fine lines for fur, light brown color; 2 cocks, identical; 2 cows, almost identical, brown incised for fur; 1 goat, grey-brown; 1 pair of rabbits, smooth yellow; 2 horses identical, smooth yellow; 1 dragon, coiled angular surfaces; 1 dog, smooth yellow; 1 monkey, dark brown, many tiny incised lines for fur; 2 tigers, identical in shape, but one is dark brown, other white, each has black painted eyes, cord hole through backs. L. each 2 cm.

Top and bottom compartments are closed by separate pieces attached. Interior of each is lacquered. Continuous incised design over all sections of a dragon amidst clouds, w/ a sword entwined by tail. The netsuke (b) is a manju type of dark wood in two pieces turned on a lathe, w/ deep incised scroll pattern design. The purple cord attaches to an inner loop of the under section, and passes thru a hole in the lower section. The ojime (c) is oval shaped metal w/ flat sides, and checkerboard pattern, L. (a) 8cm. According to the donor's catalog: "Netsuke in old ivory of a grotto backed by a denoted and decorating tree. Within - a man is seated in strength and command. Clad in a sweeping robe - his left arm - raised - and the right hand caressing the back [untranscribable] dragon - who languishes with his head on the lap of the mighty man. Bashiko (Ma Hsi Wang) - a sennin and legendary Chinese physician who lived from 2697 to 2597 B.C. at the time of Huang Ti. He is shown performing operation on the ailing dragon - which he followed by a draught of liquorice. Sometimes he is shown carried into the clouds on the back of his grateful patient. It is a profound Netsuke of strength and archaic mysticism. Bashiko."
