Purchased from Samoniego in Puebla; shop just behind the cathedra. According to Alejandro de Avila Blomberg (1984), textiles from this area became popular in the tourist market in the early 1960s and the quality deteriorated markedly, as evident in this piece. This piece was purchased for 90.00 pesos; current rate of exchange, 12.50 pesos to $1.00. See Cordry and Cordry for a photograph of one of the old pieces assigned to San Francisco Chapantla, which does not seem to be a village in this area.

Red emb. in various techniques at neck, shoulder, sleeves. Good condition.
