Front center: flower basket (appliqued machine embroidery) over lace strips symbolizing rocks and water. Top right and left: trifoils of bead-chains (clouds?) flanking one paillette star. Red pompom and triangular constellation in star-studded sky represent top rank in imperial examinations. b: bag of beads that have fallen off cap.

All ornaments backed with the character for “Joy” in pink plush. Some plaques in braided gold wires “cuan si”. The whole on a braided body “tai dse” of wire wound with black satin. (See donor’s accession notes for her drawing of crown.) Fide: Ilse M. Fang, 8/28/2001: First, a wire band with black satin for the network would be made. This has cloud, plants, acanthus leaf images. Crown adorned with metal and kingfisher frame; inside each frame have ornament, petals, semi-precious stone like amethyst or river pearls - metal stamens - lotus pod images. “Phoenix zone” in front, for women. The bangles would cover the eyes. Butterfly wings with jade. Double happiness symbols for wedding. Tassels, etc., are all prescribed. Blue kingfisher feathers are glued onto metal background.

Hearst Museum object titled Hat, accession number 9-21242, described as Hat. Round Manchu hat. Purple satin crown, red cotton lining. Black felt side, 7.5 cm high. Hat 22 cm in diameter. Brass button from which 13 cm long blue silk cord-ends radiate, blue denoting a certain Manchu Banner.

Crowned by red endless-knot button of strands of red silk thread. Blue satin eight-pointed star applique ends in clouds hanging over edge of crown. Cloud-ended star decorated with neatly stitched-on satin flowers in white, pink and green shades. Upturned brim otter skin. One seam in front, two in back. Stitched red satin brim lining; crown lined with red cotton folded whirligig-wise in center. From brim, one-third up in rear, emanate two 85 cm long red satin ribbons from 3 cm long slit, widening to 7 cm after 2 cm and increasing to 13 cm width 3.5 cm before each ends in a point. For the first 15 cm, they are sewn together, a three-bud-like piece of applique even covering the seam where the twin pattern meets. 13 cm and another 23 cm further down, the two ribbons are artfully tacked together. Peony and narcissus pattern, with rocks at the ends. Overall height of hat: 12 cm; crown: 10 cm; brim: 6 cm. Greatest diameter 21 cm; crown top: 13.5 cm; head opening 15 cm.

The lower border ends in appliqued cloud pattern edged in green and silver. Borders finely and colorfully embroidered in a pattern of flowers, Buddha-hand citrus fruit, bats and butterflies. Pink cotton lining, violet braided button and loop closing. Borders outlined in green piping; the blue center strip additionally in white and gold. Headband length 50 cm; height 6.5 cm.

Mostly coarse satin and stem stitch. Seed stitch where appropriate, and exclusively on ear flaps. Cerulean blue silk lining. Split on lower side reveals interfacing of satin before embroidering, and silk-waste padding. Overall length of folded piece: 36 cm; width of unfolded lower end: 28 cm; front end height: 12 cm; height of neck guard: 22 cm.

Upper border cerulian blue with a gold-thread-outlined yellow satin applique wave frieze resting on red, pink, and white piping. Violet center panel topped and underlined by a yellow, loosely woven tape, with a red-dot-on-black-bar pattern. Lower border tells the tale of the English China Willow pattern: magpies forming a bridge in heaven for the cowherd to meet his bride, the weaver’s daughter. Various stitches in corded and flossy silk thread on white satin. Clouds appliqued onto the blue ends in maize-colored, patterned silk, outlined with a violet woven tape with blossom-and-dot pattern in white; and silver thread. Apricot-colored cotton lining; no closure. Long edge (lower edge) of headband 45 cm L.

Heart-shaped placque of red satin edged green. Seam covered with red and light green woven tape. Placque: coarsely embroidered flower pattern in satin and long stitch in yellow, pale and blushing pink, light and emerald green; reclining boy’s “horn” stem of fine black silk threads wound with silk threads in the colors of the embroidery and ending in a tassle. Placque fringed by 2 cm. long fine black silk thread ends. Fringed placque width 12 cm.; center height 9 cm. Length of headband adjustable with a stitch.

Above, cranes and peaches (for long life) between clouds. Around crown: bats and clouds, bamboo; lions with their embroidered balls, coral stems. Upturned ear flaps in yellow satin embroidered with chrysanthemums, the sketched design not followed faithfully. Lining ultramarine-blue, patterned silk. Mostly coarse satin stitch, some seed stitch or stem stitch; padding for eyes, overlay cording for spines. Ear flaps originally tacked back. Overall length of folded piece 41 cm; width of unfolded lower end: 28 cm; front center height: 11.5 cm; height of neck guard: 26 cm.
