Hearst Museum object titled Burden basket, accession number 1-12073, described as Old burden basket; worn and dirty from use; portions of back heavily coated with grime (from tar weed?); several small holes. Bottom appears to have been begun with leather weft, which came partly apart. A stiff leather patch was sewn over the hole but most of the warps it was sewn to have broken off. A hoop is sewn to the rim but is coming undone in 2 places. Basket is mostly plain twined. There are all-over white overlay (2-faced?) designs, (4?) parallel zigzagging bands (now obscured by dirt). Two tags: "Wailaki". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined burden basket, used. Starting knot present but is present but is obscured by a leather patch. The basket has peeled shoot warps with conifer root wefts and beargrass design overlay. A rod is lashed on with a red peeled shoot on the interior of the rim. The base of the basket is covered with leather. There are leather wefts in the starting knot. From the bottom of the basket above the leather there is three strand twining for 1 1/2 inches, followed by plain twining to the uppermost two weft rows, where there are two weft rows of three strand twining. The basket has zigzag designs as well as a horizontal triangle band along at the top of the basket. The workface is on the exterior. The overlay is primarily single sided, with the primary design on the exterior. The basket slightly undulates; one side is flattened, probably from carrying.
