The oblong mug has a cream-yellow ground that is stenciled in four colors with an image of a pagoda and monastery gate among trees. On the reverse side an inscription reads “Beautiful scenery of the Motherland” (祖國風光Zuguo fengguang). Brown bowstring decorates the rim. On the right a stenciled design shows three flags standing on a terraced farm beside a dam. At the upper right a red inscription reads: “The glory of going Up to the mountains, Down to the countryside” (上山下乡 光荣Shangshan Xiaxiang guangrong). The rim is cobalt blue.

The white ground is stenciled in sky blue with a submarine marked “239.” On the submarine there is a large red flag with reserved inscription “1978. 10.” framed by a sky blue dotted lozenge with inscription: Commemoration of battle (会戦留念 Hui zhan liunian). Blue bowstring decorates the rim.

Hearst Museum object titled Mug with lid, accession number 9-23898a,b, described as Enamel mug with lid. The front features a green stencil of a rifle against leaves. The red slogan above reads: “Resist America; support Korea. Guard home, defend the country” (抗美援朝 保家衛國Kang Mei yuan Chao baojia weiguo). On the back a red inscription indicates that the mug was a gift to People’s Liberation Army (PLA) soldiers, here referred as “the most endearing people” (最可愛的人Zui keai de ren). At the top of the mug a register of doves fly in a blue sky. The nine-character inscription at the bottom notes the occasion: A committee of Chinese People’s Representatives visit Korea [to express] sympathy (中國人民赴朝慰問団 Zhongguo renmin fu Chao weiwentuan). Note that all but one character is in full-form script. Cobalt blue decorates the rim and handle. The edge of the lid is sprayed with sky blue pigment. Acquisition Data: Baoguosi. The top line, consisting of two characters “gifting to” (贈给zenggei), is inserted with a dove in the middle. The rest of the two lines states that it was specially made in commemoration of “the hardworking labors for the cause of constructing motherland” by State-operated 211 Factory in 7th November, 1957.
