Mr. Hu was given the bowl as his all-purpose dish when he was a “sent down youth” 知青 in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, in 1969.
Hearst Museum object titled Mug with lid, accession number 9-23924a,b, described as Enamel mug with lid. The white ground is stenciled with a red inscription, quoting “Carry the Revolution through to the End” (将革命进行到底 Jiang Geming Jinxing Dao Di), an article by Mao compiled in his collected works, followed by Mao’s signature.
