Hearst Museum object titled Bowl basket, accession number 1-12022, described as Hemispherical coiled basket with open stitch. Tag: "Yuki". Per Ralph Shanks: Coiled basket bowl, appears to be a food serving bowl. Used, with wear and food residue. The start is a coil start. The coil foundation is rod and splint redbud shoots. The wefts are interior peeled redbud. The rim is plain wrapped, with a tapered coil ending with six diagonal backstitches. The weft fag ends and the weft moving ends are bound under. The wefts are split infrequently on the exterior, on the interior up to half are split. The basket has an exterior work face, a rightward work direction, and a down to the right slant of weft twist.
Hearst Museum object titled Bowl basket, accession number 1-12027, described as Large flaring coiled basket. Tag: "Yuki". Per Ralph Shanks: Coiled flaring basket serving bowl, with residue from food. The basket has a tight spiral start. The coil foundation is one rod and splints of peeled shoots. The wefts are peeled redbud with unpeeled redbud designs. The design on the sides of the basket is two horizontal zigzags that almost, but do not intersect. There are no random rectangles. The rim is plain wrapped with some rim ticks. The coil ending is tapered with five remaining diagonal backstitches. The weft fag ends are primarily clipped or bound under, with some concealed. The weft moving ends are primarily bound under. The exterior has below 5% split stiches. The interior of the basket has nearly 50% split stiches. The basket has an exterior workface with a rightward work direction and a down to the right slant of weft twist. The basket was made by a half Wailaki half Yuki person. The basket has more Wailaki aspects, with the lack of random rectangles and the design of non-intersecting lines, than Yuki aspects, but shares common Yuki and Wailaki techniques and materials.
Hearst Museum object titled Parching basket, accession number 1-12018, described as Very old hemispherical parching basket. Tag: "Yuki" Per Ralph Shanks: Coiled parching basket that has had broken bottom replaced with coiled patch. The basket has food debris. The start on the patch is a flaring coil over splints. The patch has mostly splits with only a few rods and widely spaced wefts. The warps on the rest of the basket are rods and splints. The basket has peeled redbud background wefts and unpeeled redbud design wefts. The design is four horizontal bands of unpeeled redbud that have a break at the same area of the band. The rim is plain wrapped; the rim coil ending is missing. The basket and patch have an exterior workface. There are many split stitches on the backface. On the patch the weft fag ends are bound under, with the moving ends concealed. On the basket the weft fag ends are sometimes trimmed or concealed, but are most often bound under. The basket moving ends are difficult to see, but some are concealed and some are bound under. The basket and patch have a rightward work direction and a down to the right slant of weft twist. The work direction, materials and techniques used in the basket are consistent with Wailaki manufacture, especially considering the lack of random unpeeled redbud design rectangles.
Hearst Museum object titled Sifting tray, accession number 1-12042, described as Small plate form coiled basket. Tag "Yuki". Per Ralph Shanks: Coiled flaring basket bowl, probably used for sifting. The basket has food debris inside it. The basket has a coiled start. The basket has a splint foundation. The wefts are redbud, peeled and unpeeled. The design is two horizontal bands, with small squares inside them. The rim is all unpeeled redbud. The rim is plain wrapped and the rim coil ending is slightly tapered with four back stitches. The weft fag ends are bound under and clipped. The moving ends are concealed. Most of the stitches are split on the back face, and are interlocking. The basket has an exterior workface, the work direction is to the right, and the slant of weft twist is primarily down to the right.
Hearst Museum object titled Storage basket, accession number 1-12023, described as Small spherical coiled basket. Tag: "Yuki". Per Ralph Shanks: Coiled globose storage basket. There are no abrasions or food residue. The basket has a coiled start. The coil foundation is three rod peeled shoots. The wefts are peeled redbud background with unpeeled redbud designs. The design includes diagonal crossed lines. There are no random rectangles. The rim is plain wrapped; the rim coil ending is slightly tapered and has 13 diagonal back stitches. The weft fag ends are bound under, clipped, or concealed. The weft moving ends are bound under or concealed. The exterior of the basket has a few split stiches; the interior has a majority of split stiches. The basket has an exterior workface, with a rightward work direction, and a down to the right slant of weft twist. The maker, Lizzie Sain, was half-Yuki half-Wailaki. The basket has features that include both Yuki and Wailaki techniques and materials. The lack of a presence of random design rectangles makes this more similar to a Wailaki made basket.
