Hearst Museum object titled Basket, accession number 1-70244, described as Coiled, wide bottom. Tag: "Mission Type". Per Ralph Shanks: Coiled globular basket with a concave base. The foundation starts with shredded juncus and then becomes deergrass bundle. Wefts are juncus, both natural tan and orange and black dyed with some sumac wefts at the base. The designs are complex, the bottom has several concentric rings followed by striped bands, on the side are four zigzags of solid colors, the rim has two undecorated coils. The design is not typical of Southern California baskets, with the complexity of the design reminiscent of Chumash or Gabrielino work. The basket has a rightward work direction, with bound under weft fag ends that are unusually long, ranging up to 3/4 of an inch/2 cm in length. Unusually long weft fag ends are found in Tatavium archaeological baskets. The basket has a plain wrapped rim with a tapered coil ending. Probably Southwestern California in origin.
