Hearst Museum object titled Plaque, accession number 1-20835, described as Small basketry. Tag "Klamath R. Tribes Att.". Second metal tag "277". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined basket plaque. The basket has a crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is probably hazel (Corylus cornuta californica). The background weft is conifer root (Pinophyta; though according to Ruth Merrill the weft is Grape root, Vitus californica). The weft overlay is beargrass (Xerophyllum tenax) and maidenhair fern (Adiantum). At the starting knot there is 1 inch of three strand twining, followed by plain twining to the rim. The main design is three horizontal bands of triangles, forming a flower-like design. The basket has a rightward work direction. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist. The overlay is primarily one-sided. The basket is possibly Wiyot, based on the extensive use of black in the design, and its provenience of Humboldt County.
Hearst Museum object titled Plaque, accession number 1-255551, described as Twined. Round with slight concave. Open weave from rim .5 cm; yellow with brown center and edge. Design is five black terraced elements pointed outwards inset with yellow triangles, alternating with hanging rectangles inset with yellow triangles pointed inward. A black triangle hangs from each rectangle. Rim is alternating brown and yellow. Tag "Klamath River Tribes". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined basket plaque. The basket has a crossed warp starting knot, slightly indented. The warp material is probably hazel. The background weft is conifer root. The weft overlay is beargrass, maidenhair fern, and two unidentified materials, one possibly a greeenish grey dyed beargrass, the other a brown material that could be faded red-dyed woodwardia. At the starting knot there is .5 inch of three strand twining, followed by plain twining until .5 inch below the rim where there are two weft rows of three strand twining, followed by .25 inch of openwork. The rim is formed by at least three weft rows of plain twining with one rod that was added to support the rim. The rim is wrapped in beargrass and possibly faded red-dyed woodwardia. The design includes one band of triangles, followed by two bands of geometric clusters, followed by one band of triangles near the rim. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist and a rightward work direction. The overlay is primarily one-sided. The basket is from Northwestern California, possibly Karuk based on the area of collection.
Hearst Museum object titled Plaque, accession number 1-235252, described as Twined basketry. 3 - lobed design comprising parallelograms in reddish - brown material with black horizontal bands. Tag "Kl. R. Tr. att.". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined basket plaque. The basket has a crossed warp starting knot, which is wrapped and slightly indented. The warp material is probably hazel. The background weft is conifer root. The weft overlay is beargrass, maidenhair fern, and red-dyed woodwardia. At the starting knot there is .25 inch of three strand twining, followed by plain twining until the rim, where there is a .25 inch of openwork. The rim is formed by a one weft row of plain twining with rods and beargrass. The rim is wrapped in beargrass, red-dyed woodwardia, and a brown material, possibly conifer root. Much of the wrapping is missing. The design includes a star/flower shape at the start. The main design is an undulating band of stacked triangles, parallelograms, and trapezoids. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist and a rightward work direction. The overlay is primarily one-sided, with an irregular red dyed woodwardia and beargrass overlay on the back face. The basket is from Northwestern California.
Hearst Museum object titled Plaque, accession number 1-28155, described as Twined basketry tray, openwork edge. Hoop at rim has come unstitched in several places; top surface of tray is very grimy from use, moldy; bottom side is in fairly good condition; design is clear. Overlay design, mostly single-faced; white and alder red; circular stripes and bands give the effect of one starburst within another. Tag "Nongatl". Per Ralph Shanks: Flat circular twined basket tray with residue on both faces, possibly used as a serving tray. Crossed warp starting knot, slightly indented, slightly dissimilar to Northwestern California starting knots. Probably willow or hazel warps and conifer root wefts, with a beargrass and red-dyed woodwardia overlay design. Starting at the starting knot there is five rows of three strand twining, followed by 1/2 inch of plain twining over two warps, followed by plain twining over one warp for 3 1/2 inches, followed by openwork parallel warps for 1/2 inch, followed by two weft rows of plain twining. The two weft rows at the rim are wrapped with a rod inside the wrapping. The design is primarily two horizontal bands of woodwardia triangles interspersed with six horizontal single weft rows of woodwardia. The rim wrapping is alternating woodwardia and beargrass. The overlay is single-sided with the overlay on the workface with a few weft stitches of beargrass on the back face. The workface is on the opposite side of the labels. The basket has a rightward work direction and an up to the right slant of weft twist.
