Hearst Museum object titled Basket hat, accession number 1-148886, described as Twined basket.  Adiantum fern stem design material.  Tag "Klamath R. Tribes att.". Per Ralph Shanks:  Twined woman's basket hat.  Crossed warp starting knot, slightly indented. The warp material is probably hazel. The weft material is conifer root.  The weft overlay design has a beargrass background with maidenhair fern designs. Starting at the starting knot, there is three strand twining for 1/2 inch, followed by 1 inch of plain twining, followed by one weft row of three strand twining.  Plain twining continues to 1/2 inch below the rim where there is one weft row of three strand twining.  The rim is trimmed. The main design is three sets of two stacked parallelograms with two stacked trapezoids and a triangle on their interior. The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The workface is on the exterior.  The overlay is single-sided, with the design on the exterior.  The basket is from Northwestern California, perhaps Yurok based on the area of collection.

Vertical rhomboid and triangle design in red - brown and black on wheat colored field.  Tag "Klamath River". Per Ralph Shanks:  Twined woman's basket hat. Crossed warp starting knot.  The warp material is probably willow. The weft material is conifer root.  The weft overlay design is beargrass, red-dyed woodwardia, and maidenhair fern. Starting at the starting knot, there is three strand twining for .5 inch, followed by 1.5 inches of plain twining, followed by one weft row of three strand twining.  Plain twining continues to the rim where there is one weft row of three strand twining 1/2 inch below the rim.  The rim is trimmed.  The main design is three sets of five diagonally stacked woodwardia and maidenhair rectangles with triangles on either side.  The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The workface is on the exterior.  The overlay is single-sided, with the design on the exterior.  The basket is from Northwest California.  There are two light hairs woven into the top exterior of the hat.

Triangular design in red - brown and black on glossy yellowish white field. Small break in one area of edge.  Tag "Klamath River". Per Ralph Shanks:  Woman’s twined hat.  Crossed warp starting knot.  The warp material is probably willow.  The background wefts are conifer root.  The weft overlay is beargrass, red dyed woodwardia, and maidenhair fern.  Starting at the starting knot is 1/2 inch of three strand twining, followed by 1.25 inches of plain twining.  After that, there is one weft row of three strand twining.  Plain twining continues to 1/2 inch below the rim where there is another weft row of three strand twining.  After that plain twining continues to the end of the rim, which is trimmed.  The design background overlay is beargrass.   The design at the start is formed by an encircling row of maidenhair fern, surrounded by a circle of woodwardia triangles.  A second design follows that with overlay over the three strand twining with triangles of woodwardia outlined by maidenhair fern below it.  The main design is comprised of a maidenhair band with repeating elements comprised of three triangles and a diamond.  The design above the rim is a repeat of the three strand twining with overlay and a band of triangles above it.  At the rim are four sets of two triangles.  The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The workface is on the exterior, with a rightward work direction.  The overlay is on the exterior, with some pattern coming through to the other side.  The basket is from Northwestern California.

The weft overlay is beargrass, red-dyed Woodwardia, and maidenhair fern. Starting at the starting knot is ⅓ inch of three strand twining, followed by 1.5 inches of plain twining. After that, there is one weft row of three strand twining. Plain twining continues to ½ inch below the rim where there is another weft row of three strand twining. After that plain twining continues to the end of the rim, which is trimmed. The background overlay is beargrass. Starting at the starting knot there is a third an inch of conifer root with no overlay. A star/flower pattern is formed by triangles at the start. A band of triangles follows a band of beargrass. The main design is formed by pairs of stacked parallelograms and triangles. This followed by another band of triangles. At the rim there are three sets of triangles and rectangles. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist. The workface is on the exterior, with a rightward work direction. The overlay is only on the exterior. The basket is from Northwestern California.

Alternate triangles face in opposite direction.  Tag "Kl. R. Tr. att.".  There is a swastika in ink on the interior of the cap as well as "IL" also in ink. Per Ralph Shanks:  Twined woman's basket hat.  Crossed warp starting knot, wrapped with maidenhair fern.  The warp material is probably willow or hazel. The weft material is conifer root, which is also the design background.  The weft overlay design is maidenhair fern, red-dyed woodwardia, and beargrass. Starting at the starting knot, there is three strand twining for .5 inch, followed by 1.5 inches of plain twining, followed by one weft row of lattice twining.  Plain twining continues to .5 inch below the rim where there is one weft row of lattice twining.  The rim is trimmed.  The main design is a horizontal band of alternating direction maidenhair fern triangles outlined by smaller beargrass triangles.  The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The workface is on the exterior.  The overlay is single-sided, with the design on the exterior.  The basket is from Northwestern California.  There are several hairs woven into the basket.

Main section has four bands of diagonally stacked trapezoids bisected into triangles by yellow and black lines. Two bands of sawtooth lines. Rim has four trapezoids.  Tag "Klamath River Tribes".
