Woven with grass foundation under multi-colored thread (yellow, black, brown, tan). Coiled from center, woven design is in bands and geometric figures (diamonds, triangles, trapezoids). Fabric loop is attached to one edge for hanging.

Hoefler with large hat and beard, and Harold Austin with helmet with motor vehicle in the grass walled village of Kiya Be. Hoefler's original description: "Grass-walled village of Kiya Be. After a long battle with sand, after many hardships and days spent in crossing huge rivers on risky rafts, we at least reached this weird country in the French Congo where dwell a strange people in a most unusual place. These are the Sara-Kyabe, whose women sport the huge disks in their lips. Notice them standing near the grass wall at the left of photo. This was the first motor that ever came to the place and proved the world’s wonder to them. They would crowd about while it stood still, but when the motor roared they scattered in wild haste. Sara-Kyabe people. Expedition reaches a weird country. After a battle with sand and many hardships in getting the truck across rivers, we managed to reach the village of Kiya-Be, and there found a strange people living in a strange double tower. These primitive folks had never before seen a motor car and crowded about in great wonder, but when it started they scattered in haste.
