Hearst Museum object titled Spirit house, accession number 9-18899, described as Spirit House (san phra phuun), model, wood; rectangular house and base; house on stilts, steep pitched shingled roof; overhanging eaves; railing around base; stairs leading to covered porch; movable shuttered windows; Per Herbert Phillips; “Virtually every public or private building in Thailand has a san phra phuun, generally in the Northeast corner. Modern ones are made of concrete, stucco, or terrazzo. All are miniature. Human beings “rent” the land from the Chaw Thi, the Lord of the Land. In so doing, they must provide the Lord with an adobe, and, on holidays, with rice flowers and joss sticks as an expression of their gratitude to him. If not, evil will befall them. This specimen obtained from a san phra phuun factory.”
