Peeled shoot, possibly hazel (Corylus cornuta californica), warps and conifer root (Pinophyta) wefts with an overlay of beargrass (Xerophyllum tenax). Starting at the starting knot there is three strand twining for 1 1/2 inches, followed by 1 inch of plain twining, followed by 1-2 weft rows of three strand twining, followed by three weft rows of plain twining, followed by one weft row of three strand twining, followed by 1 inch of plain twining, followed by one weft row of three strand twining, followed by 1 inch of plain twining, followed by one weft row of three strand twining, followed by 3/4 inch of plain twining, followed by one weft row of three strand twining, followed by plain twining for 3 1/2 inches, followed by one weft row three strand twining at the rim. The rim is trimmed. The overlay design is six horizontal bands of beargrass, with a top row of zigzags and a middle row of downward pointing triangles. The workface is on the exterior. The overlay design is primarily on the exterior face with some design evident on the interior. The basket slightly undulates. Hearst Museum object titled Cooking basket, accession number 1-2550, described as Bowl. Tag "Tcunus Lassik". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined basket cooking bowl, not used. Crossed warp starting knot, not Northwest California style. Warps are a peeled shoot and wefts are conifer root (Pinophyta) with a beargrass (Xerophyllum tenax) overlay. Starting at the starting knot there is three strand twining for 1 1/2 inches, followed by plain twining to the rim. The rim is trimmed, with many of the warp sticks extending up to 1/16 of an inch above the rim. The design is three horizontal bands, with beargrass outlining diamonds followed by a beargrass zigzag, followed by another band of diamonds. The basket has an exterior workface. The overlay is on the exterior and interior. The slant of weft twist is up to the right; the work direction is to the right. The basket undulates.
Hearst Museum object titled Cooking basket, accession number 1-214069, described as Hemispherical, plain twining with maidenhair fern stem overlay decoration, dark brown zigzag band above center on Xerophyllum tenax ground. Lattice twining reinforcing rod below rim. "An anomalous piece in that it has Lassik features of construction but a Klamath R. style design centered on two rows of fine lattice twining." Tag found in basket, apparently from exhibit "Twined mush basket. Lassik. California. Coll. J.C. Merriam". Second tag on basket "Lassik att." Per Ralph Shanks: Twined basket cooking bowl, not used. Crossed warp starting knot, not Northwestern California style. Warps are a peeled shoot, probably willow, and the wefts are conifer root with a beargrass and maidenhair fern overlay. Starting at the starting knot there is three strand twining for 2 1/2 inches, followed by plain twining for 1/4 inch, followed by two weft rows of three strand twining, followed by plain twining for 2 1/4 inches, followed by one weft row of three strand twining, followed by 2 1/4 inches of plain twining, followed by one weft row of lattice twining around a small rod, followed by plain twining for 3/4 inch, followed by one weft row of lattice twining around a small rod, followed by plain twining for 2 1/2 inches, followed by one weft row of three strand twining, followed by one weft row of lattice twining around a large rod, followed by one weft row of three strand twining, followed by three rows of plain twining. The rim is trimmed, with no warp sticks extending beyond the rim. The design is one horizontal band, with beargrass outlining a maidenhair fern zigzag and beargrass two stacked triangles repeating above and below the main band. The basket has an exterior workface. The overlay is on the exterior and interior irregularly. The slant of weft twist is up to the right; the work direction is to the right. The basket slightly undulates. The basket has all of the attributes of a Lassik or Wailaki basket.
Hearst Museum object titled Cooking basket, accession number 1-2547, described as Bowl. Tag: "Tcunus" other side "Lassik". Second tag: "Lassik". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined basket cooking pot, used, with residue present. Crossed warp starting knot, dissimilar to Northwestern California starting knots. Peeled shoot warps and conifer root (Pinophyta) wefts with an overlay of beargrass (Xerophyllum tenax). Starting at the starting knot there is three strand twining for 1 inch, followed by plain twining to the rim. The rim is trimmed, with the warp sticks extending up to 1/8th inch above the last weft row. The overlay design is two horizontal bands of diamonds followed by one band of downward pointing triangles. The workface is on the exterior. The overlay design is on the exterior and interior faces. The basket undulates slightly. The basket has a rightward work direction and an up to the right slant of weft twist.
Hearst Museum object titled Cooking basket, accession number 1-97844, described as Twined, tub-shaped; 4 bands of design in Xerophyllum tenax overlay, the lower 3 are chevron bands; reinforcing row of lattice twining at rim. Three break-outs in rim, several cracks. Pine root weft; peeled shoot warp sticks. Mainly plain twined. Tag: "Wailaki attr.". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined cooking basket, used. Crossed warp start, not a traditional wrapped Northwest California style starting knot, it has seven plain twined rows on the exterior and interior, probably over seven warps. See 1-2543 for a similar start. The warp material is a peeled shoot, possibly willow; the wefts are conifer root with an overlay design in beargrass. Starting at the starting knot there is three strand twining for about 3/4 inch, followed by plain twining up to the one row of lattice twining over a large rod, which is natively repaired in at least one area; after the lattice twining there is two rows of three strand twining followed by two rows of plain twining. The rim is trimmed with no warp sticks protruding. The basket somewhat undulates. The work direction is to the right, with an exterior workface and up to the right slant of weft twist. The overlay is irregular double sided, with the main design on the exterior. The basket was attributed to the Wailaki by Larry Dawson based on a comparison with 1-12121, but if one looks at 1-2543, which is Lassik, there is enough similarities to bring an absolute attribution to Wailaki into question. The basket is probably then either Wailaki or Lassik.

The design is six horizontal bands, one plain band followed by three zigzag bands, followed by one band of triangles, followed by a plain band. The basket has an exterior workface. The overlay is on the exterior and irregularly in the interior. The slant of weft twist is up to the right; the work direction is to the right. The basket undulates.
