Per Ralph Shanks: Twined woman's basket hat. Crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is probably hazel or willow. The weft material is conifer root. The weft overlay design has a maidenhair background with beargrass designs. Black string was used to tie down the last weft row. Starting at the starting knot, there is three strand twining for 1/2 inch, followed by 1 inch of plain twining, followed by one weft row of three strand twining. Plain twining continues to 1/2 inch below the rim, where there is one weft row of three strand twining. The rim is trimmed. The main design is six elements comprised of triangle surrounded by six triangles. The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right slant of weft twist. The workface is on the exterior. The overlay is single-sided, with the design on the exterior. The basket is from Northwestern California, possibly Wiyot based on the extensive use of black maidenhair fern background, or Yurok based on the comments on the catalog card. There is a hair woven into the basket near the start.

R. Tr. att.". Per Ralph Shanks: Woman’s twined cap. Crossed warp starting knot with a beargrass overlay. The warp material is probably hazel. The background wefts are conifer root. The weft overlay is beargrass, red dyed woodwardia, and maidenhair fern. Starting at the starting knot is .5 inch of three strand twining, followed by 1.5 inches of plain twining. After that, there is one weft row of lattice twining. Plain twining continues to .75 inch below the rim where there is another weft row of lattice twining. After that plain twining continues to the end of the rim, which is trimmed. The design background overlay is beargrass on the lower .75 of the cap; the upper .25 background is woodwardia. The design at the start is a horizontal band of beargrass outlined by maidenhair fern. Below the lattice twining is a row of alternating beargrass and maidenhair fern. The main design is a horizontal zigzag band on a beargrass background. The design at the rim is five elements of two sets of right triangles. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist. The workface is on the exterior, with a rightward work direction. The overlay is on the exterior, with some pattern coming through to the other side. The basket is from Northwestern California.

Near rim is extra single row of 3 strand twining. Plain twining. Conifer root, white grass.

Crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is probably hazel. The background wefts are conifer root. The weft overlay is beargrass, red dyed Woodwardia, and maidenhair fern. Starting at the starting knot is ⅓ inch of three strand twining, followed by 1.5 inches of plain twining. After that , there is one weft row of lattice twining with a reinforcing rod. Plain twining continues to the ½ inch below the rim where there is another row of lattice twining. After that plain twining continues to the end of the rim, which is trimmed. The background overlay is red dyed Woodwardia. Starting at the starting knot there is one inch of conifer root with no overlay. After this there is a band of red dyed Woodwardia, followed by a horizontal band of diagonal beargrass and maidenhair fern. That is followed by another band of red dyed Woodwardia. Followed by another horizontal band of diagonal beargrass and maidenhair fern with groups of three triangles interspersed throughout. After that is one row of checkered beargrass and maidenhair fern, followed by a band of beargrass. At the rim there are repeating patterns of three beargrass triangles with red dyed Woodwardia with a horizontal stripe of maiden hair fern. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist. The workface is on the exterior, with a rightward work direction. The overlay is on the exterior, with some pattern coming through to the other side. The basket is from Northwestern California.
