Hearst Museum object titled Lid, accession number 1-235245, described as Twined basketry. Cover for basket (missing). 3 diagonal series of connected parallelograms with zigzag designs within. Tag "Kl. R. Tr. Att.". In black pen on the interior of the basket is an "R" and a swastika, probably owner/ dealer marks. Per Ralph Shanks: Twined basket lid/ cover. The basket has a crossed warp starting knot, covered with maidenhair fern on both sides. The warp material is possibly hazel or willow. The background weft is conifer root. The weft overlay is beargrass and maidenhair fern. At the starting knot there is .5 inch of three strand twining. After that plain twining continues until the rim, where there is one weft row of three strand twining. The design is four rows of alternating black and tan at the base, followed by diagonal stepped zigzags. The basket has an exterior workface with a rightward work direction. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist. The overlay is primarily on the outside. The rim is trimmed. The basket is from Northwest California, possibly Yurok based on the designs. There is a hair woven into the basket.
