: Hearst Museum object titled Scales: russian, accession number 2-2144a-c, described as Scale with equal arm balance. a) Iron beam incised “M 1843” and cyrillic letters on crossbar. b) and c) are deep copper pans, earch with leather straps attached in 3 places on edge of pan. Said by Hall to be “used by Russians at St. Michael when trading with natives in 1820” but date of 1843 is clearly incised on beam crossbar. Inscription reads: “Tula A.A. 1843”. ula is the most prominent metal crafts production center in Russia, just south of Moscow.
