Silk, varicolored embroidery in silk and metallic threads; macrame; silk tassels; metal ornaments; silk lining.  China attr.  According to Mary Hays this is a so-called "court vest" worn by Chinese women (not to court, however, for they were forbidden there).  the chest area would properly be adorned with a mandarin square on either side, indicating rank.  46.5 cm. across shoulders, l. not incl. fringe 88 cm.
Hearst Museum object titled Tunic, accession number 9-22470, described as Reindeer skin tunic; handmade, reindeer skin, woman's summer tunic. Skin, devoid of hair, is dyed a deep sepia.  decorated with fur ruffs at hem and sleeves, white hide bands and medallions at edge of hood, around sleeves and at hem. Beadwork medallions and pendants, some with shamanist amulets decorate hood, and tunic body. A bib of decoratively pierced fur and hide attaches to the front of the tunic.  The hood and yoke and back of the tunic are partially lined with reindeer hide with the hair intact.
Hearst Museum object titled Tunic, accession number 9-12076, described as Tunic; Jama -- robe or tunic; Parsi's priest's; white muslin; cotton; full length, long sleeves; full gathered skirt; front opening closes with four sets of ties; L. 134 cm., W. 46 cm. Made by tailors. Worn by Parsi priests as part of their ceremonial garb, usually over white cotton trousers. This jama (word has Persian/Moghul origins) belonged to the donor's husband, a priest in Udwada, centre of the Parsi religion in India.

Embroidery in satin, running, and knot stitches. pattern: peonies, orchids, plum and other fruit blossoms; squash and “Buddha Fingers”, citrus; butterflies and bats. Lining cobalt blue, striped silk. Lower hemlines slightly rounded. Four closures: yellow and brown metal buttons, decorated with peonies; black satin loops. W. center back to sleeve end: 66 cm; bottom hem: 76 cm.; Length: from neckline 101.5 cm.; W. sleeve opening: 21 cm.
Hearst Museum object titled Tunic, accession number 9-12048, described as Tunic:  child's; pink silk gauze woven in geometric pattern; sequined and embroidered in silver and gold wire; round, open neckline; Length: 62.5 cm, Widest width: 63 cm.  Formerly worn by Parsi children of both sexes until the age of 8 m-10.  This specimen is about 80 years old and belonged to the donor's mother.  Was probably worn on top of 9-12049, silk pantaloons.
