These pots are typical in shape and decoration of the Kwango region in general. The difference with Kuku pottery is in color - Suku pottery is always black, BaMbala pottery is reddish. Pots are built up from a base by adding rolled strips of clay to the periphery and kneading them into it. The base reposes on a broken piece of calabash which in turn rests on the ground. This allows the potter 9always female) to revolve the pot continuously on the calabash piece as the axix, thus always working on the rim closest to her.
