Hearst Museum object titled Basketry cap, accession number 1-255023, described as Basketry cap. Plain with half twist overlay. Rhomboid design in golden yellow and black on light brown field. Reinforced band around edge and crown. Edge broken in several areas and repaired with glue. Tag "Klamath River". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined woman's basket hat. Crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is probably hazel or willow. The weft material is conifer root. The weft overlay is maidenhair fern, red-dyed woodwardia, and beargrass. The design background is conifer root with no overlay. Starting at the starting knot, there is three strand twining for .75 inch, followed by 1 inch of plain twining, followed by one weft row of lattice twining. Plain twining continues to .5 inch from the rim, where there is one weft row of lattice twining. The rim is trimmed. The main design is three sets of two stacked parallelograms. The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right slant of weft twist. The workface is on the exterior. The overlay is single-sided, with the design on the exterior. The basket has an unusually flat top for the Northwestern California area. The basket is from Northwestern California.

Crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is probably hazel. The background wefts are conifer root. The weft overlay is beargrass, red dyed Woodwardia, and maidenhair fern. Starting at the starting knot is ⅓ inch of three strand twining, followed by 1.5 inches of plain twining. After that , there is one weft row of lattice twining with a reinforcing rod. Plain twining continues to the ½ inch below the rim where there is another row of lattice twining. After that plain twining continues to the end of the rim, which is trimmed. The background overlay is red dyed Woodwardia. Starting at the starting knot there is one inch of conifer root with no overlay. After this there is a band of red dyed Woodwardia, followed by a horizontal band of diagonal beargrass and maidenhair fern. That is followed by another band of red dyed Woodwardia. Followed by another horizontal band of diagonal beargrass and maidenhair fern with groups of three triangles interspersed throughout. After that is one row of checkered beargrass and maidenhair fern, followed by a band of beargrass. At the rim there are repeating patterns of three beargrass triangles with red dyed Woodwardia with a horizontal stripe of maiden hair fern. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist. The workface is on the exterior, with a rightward work direction. The overlay is on the exterior, with some pattern coming through to the other side. The basket is from Northwestern California.

The design background overlay is beargrass. The design at the start is formed by an encircling row of maidenhair fern, surrounded by a circle of woodwardia triangles. A second design follows that with overlay over the three strand twining with triangles of woodwardia outlined by maidenhair fern below it. The main design is comprised of a maidenhair band with repeating elements comprised of three triangles and a diamond. The design above the rim is a repeat of the three strand twining with overlay and a band of triangles above it. At the rim are four sets of two triangles. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist. The workface is on the exterior, with a rightward work direction.
