Per Ralph Shanks: Twined basket, meal sifting shaped, not used. The basket has a crossed warp starting knot, covered. The warp material is probably hazel. The background weft material s conifer root. The weft overlay is beargrass. The basket has three strand twining at the base for 1.5 inches, then it is plain twined up to one inch below the rim, where there are two weft rows of three strand twining, after which plain twining continues to the rim. The decoration includes three areas of design, with checkered triangles at the base, two stepped horizontal bands with triangles, and the last band with checkered triangles. The rim is trimmed. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist and a rightward work direction. The workface is on the interior. The design overlay is single-sided. The basket is from Northwestern California.

Willow shoot warps, willow root weft with overlay of beargrass leaf, maidenhair fern (black), and porcupine quills dyed yellow with lichens. Label "Klamath River Tribes att.". Per Ralph Shanks: Woman’s twined basket hat. Crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is probably hazel. The background wefts are conifer root. The weft overlay is beargrass, yellow dyed porcupine quill, and maidenhair fern. Starting at the starting knot is 1/2 inch of three strand twining, followed by 1 inch of plain twining. After that, there is one weft row of three strand twining. Plain twining continues to 1/2 inch below the rim where there is another weft row of three strand twining. After that plain twining continues to the end of the rim, which is trimmed. The background overlay is beargrass. Starting at the starting knot there is an inch of conifer root with no overlay. After that is a horizontal band of maidenhair fern and porcupine quill triangles. After that is a band of maiden hair fern and a band of porcupine quill. The main design band is comprised of triangles and a horizontal porcupine quill stepped pattern. At the rim there is another band of porcupine quill and maidenhair fern followed by truncated maidenhair triangles with porcupine designs on the interior. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist. The workface is on the exterior, with a rightward work direction. The overlay only is on the exterior. The basket is from Northwestern California.

The basket has a crossed warp starting knot, indented. The warp material is probably hazel. The background weft is conifer root. The weft overlay is beargrass and maidenhair fern. At the starting knot there is diagonal twining that extends 1.5 inches past the edge of the base, interrupted by three rows of three strand twining at the edge of the base. Plain twining continues up to the rim where there are two weft rows of three strand twining. Some of the diagonal twining has beargrass overlay. The design is an undulating horizontal band of maidenhair fern. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist. The basket has a rightward work direction with an exterior workface. The overlay is on the outside. The rim is trimmed. The basket is from Northwestern California.

Tag "Klamath River Tribes Att." Per Ralph Shanks: Twined basket bowl. The basket has a crossed warp starting knot, indented. The warp material is probably willow. The background weft is conifer root. The weft overlay is beargrass and red dyed woodwardia fern. At the starting knot there is 3 strand twining for .5 inch followed by 1.5 inches of diagonal twining, followed by one weft row of three strand twining. After that diagonal twining continues until the rim where there are two weft rows of three strand twining. The design is a band of slanted stripes of alternating beargrass and red dyed woodwardia. The basket has an exterior workface with a rightward work direction. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist. The overlay is only on the outside. The rim has the warp sticks sticking up above the rim, and are trimmed evenly. It is an uncommon basket, as very few baskets in Northwestern California are made of mostly diagonal twining. There is a hair woven into the basket.
