Hearst Museum object titled Stamp, accession number 9-8284, described as Seal, bronze; conch shell of Vishnu on base; handle with 1 hole; traces of blue, red and yellow pigment on base; Seal.  For printing design in red on saffron cotton prayer cloths and on the bodies of Hindus; also said to be used on sacred images.  According to Isabel Lockwood “used to print the name of the particular god they represent upon the forehead of the devotee.  After the morning offering has made, a small coin is given to the priest, who then imprints the mark upon the brow of the worshiper.”
