: Hearst Museum object titled Gourd bowl (jícara), accession number 3-15735, described as Gourd bowl, blossom end of pericarp; lacquered in the two layered or rayado technique, cream over blue; inside three design bands around rim with radial floral design in center of bowl; outside,three design bands from rim, one solid and two geometric with radial floral design on bottom; diameter 20.2 cm. Native name Jícara from Nahuatl, xicalli, gourd bowl. It is a vine gourd (Lagenaria). The Rayado technique: second coat of contrasting color with design incised and excess material removed from around the figure leaving design in low relief; see accession envelope No. 2897.
