Hearst Museum object titled Yarn painting, accession number 3-30757, described as HUICHOL YARN PAINTING: Colors: blue (background), red, orange, black, green, yellow, red & blue grey. Three figures along the bottom (red, green & yellow), 1 figure at upper center (blue-grey) and 1 figure at right (green). The central feature is a figure which resembles a dagger (pale pink, orange, yellow, bordered by single threads of red and green), topped with a green head with red nose, red and white mouth, black and white eyes and topped with white spiky “hair” (9 spikes). From the head an arm protrudes from each side which divides at the elbow into two, each terminating with snake heads (red, turquoise, white edged w bands of pink and white). From each elbow green and red pendulums drop, edged with yellow and black. In the lower half of the painting at each side are two “flowers” with facial features (yellow, red, green, black, white bordered with single threads of pink and green) and each with two “leaves” (yellow, pink, white) attached to a stem of yellow, one of which extends toward the base of the dagger with a wavy tail. The “flowers” terminate with a triple “root”, and each stands on a small hill of multi-colors (white, green, red, pink, black pale pink, wine, orange, forest green). 4 orange crosses are placed at random within the background, 3 to the proper left of the principle figure and one to the proper right. Inscribed on the verso is a description in Spanish by the artist; Emilio Carrillo.

Just above the brown band on proper left is a green band (pathway) edged with white on which a male figure (orange, purple, black, blue/grey, chartreuse) wearing a hat and carrying a pack is walking toward a house. The large house fills the center of the painting. Its walls and roof are represented by brown bands from which protrude a number of “branches” both inside and outside the house. A “ceiling” is indicated by a cross band of brown from which “branches” protrude downward. Standing in an arched doorway is a figure of a brown skinned woman wearing a pink, green, red and turquoise dress, and with a pink head-piece. The lower portion of the house ground if filled with sections of chartreuse, purple, white, green and a red and pink combination. The ground behind the standing woman is orange. Above the ceiling the ground is dark green. A small brown and black dog stands on the brown ground to the proper right of the house. Just above the dog a figure with brown head, orange body, and purple limbs topped by 3 black “feather” floats within the turquoise ground. Above him, in the upper proper right corner is a pyramidal structure of brown, bordered with green, with a white door. From the roof protrude 2 red, white and black devices with two loops attached to a single pole. To the proper left is an arrowhead shaped device of purple, pink white and black edged with single strand edges of pink, black and white. A short white shaft protrudes upward from the arrowhead.

Design includes a wavy band (yellow, royal blue, turquoise) separating the upper red ground from the pink and orange ground. Superimposed on the pink and orange ground is a large round object with two bird-like feet (shades of pink, wine and white) and what may be 5 tail feathers (shades of pink) at base. 2 antennae-like features are at each side (yellow white, pink). Emerging from the open top of the object is a figure of a boy with arms spread wide and wearing a pair of antlers on his head (yellow, pink, turquoise). To each side of him are pairs of triangles (red, orange, yellow) beyond which the sides of the object rise with jagged edges to the height of the boy’s antlers. These devices are black but bordered with greens and pinks. The lower portion of the round object is shades of blues, pinks, white, yellow, orange, wine and topped by several bands of green The entire figure grouping is bordered with bands of green, pink and navy blue. At bottom on each side are two devices which may represent plants with a black core and with a very pale pink protuberance on each side. The object to the right also has a white triangular inset within the black core. Yarn is attached to a 3mm thick sheet of plywood. NOTE: Insect damage on proper left edge

Serpents are white, pink, turquoise, orange yellow and with red tongues and eyes. 9 to 12 orange protuberances curls away from the back of each serpent. Each is edged with single threads of white and pink. To the right and left of the serpents are green stems with leaves and topped with a pink bud. Each green leaf has a red oval at center and the entire structure is edged with single threads of white and pink. Inscribed on the verso is a description in Spanish. Artist is Cresencio Perez Robles. rice tag affixed to base reads: “Banfoco, C-4, EASP, $120.00, Made in Mexico”

Two figures are in the lower corners, one holding a bow and arrow. Two rectangular figures with 4 green protuberances above, are immediately above the heads of the 2 figures. At center is a figure (per description, a peyote) composed of a green trapezoid w/ a round base to which 6 protuberances are attached.
