Hearst Museum object titled Basket, accession number 1-27706, described as Twined, hour-glass shaped. Tag : "Klamath R. Tribes att." Per Ralph Shanks: Open-work twined hourglass shaped basket.  The warps and wefts are willow, with some possibly unpeeled willow.  Starting at the base the rim has bound down warps, the ends facing the exterior.  After that there are two weft rows of three strand twining followed by open work with plain twining every 1/4 inch. There are two weft rows of three strand twining at the upper rim. The basket has an exterior workface, a rightward work direction, and an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The basket is from Northwest California.

Per Ralph Shanks: Close-twined and openwork rectangular basket made for sale. Rectangular crossed warp starting knot, extending to the whole base of basket. The warp material is probably willow. The basket has conifer root wefts. The overlay weft material is beargrass, maidenhair fern, and red-dyed Woodwardia. Starting at the edge of the crossed warp base there is a 0.5 inch of three strand twining followed by .75 inches plain twining, followed by a 0.5 inch of openwork parallel warps, followed by 1 inch of plain twining, followed by ⅓ of an inch of openwork crossed warps. At the rim there are 2 weft rows and a reinforcing rod wrapped with beargrass alternating with red-dyed Woodwardia. The main design is a horizontal band of squared undulating beargrass. The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right slant of weft twist. The overlay is primarily single sided, with the main design on the exterior, and a checkered Woodwardia and beargrass design on the interior. The workface is on the exterior. The basket is from Northwestern California.
