Hearst Museum object titled Lid, accession number 1-27687, described as Lid of small basket with handle, close weave, decorative design, openwork band.  Tag "NW".  Second tag "Klamath R. Tribes Att." Per Ralph Shanks:  Twined basket lid.  Crossed warp starting knot.  The warp material is possibly willow. The weft material is conifer root.  The weft overlay design background is beargrass, with red dyed woodwardia designs.  Starting at the starting knot, there is three strand twining until the base of the knob.  Plain twining continues until the rim, where there is a 1/4 inch of openwork, with crossed warps, followed by plain twining.  The rim is wrapped, and contains at least one reinforcing rod.  The main exterior design is made up of three sets of paired stacked triangles.  The overlay is one sided.  The lid has a rightward work direction, with up to the right slant of weft twist.  The workface is on the exterior.  The basket is from Northwest California.
