Hearst Museum object titled Basket start, accession number 1-21037, described as Unfinished bottom of a multiple-rod foundation coiled basket. Per Ralph Shanks: Coiled basket start. Pinhole start. Willow is the background weft and the design material is probably devils claw. It has a grass bundle foundation. Rightward work direction with a down to the right slant of weft twist. The smooth side is the workface. The weft fag ends are concealed. The moving ends are trimmed. Based on the area of collection this is probably Tübatulabal or Kawaiisu.
