Hearst Museum object titled Bowl basket, accession number 1-20844, described as Small, twined basket with black and white design. "NW Cal att". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined basket bowl. The basket probably has a crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is possibly hazel (Corylus cornuta californica). The background weft is conifer root (Pinophyta). The weft design overlay is beargrass (Xerophyllum tenax) and a red and black fern. At the starting knot there is a .5 inch of three strand twining. After that .25 inch of plain twining followed by .25 inch of three strand twining. After that plain twining continues until the rim where there is one weft row of three strand twining. The design at the base is two bands of beargrass. On the side is a horizontal band of vertical rods of alternating beargrass and fern. The design is mirrored on the interior of the basket. The basket base has an undulating surface. The basket has an exterior workface with a rightward work direction. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist. The overlay is on the outside and inside. The basket is from Northeast California, based on the use double sided overlay for all of the designs. The basket may be Wintu.
Hearst Museum object titled Cap, accession number 1-20824, described as Twined basketry cap with designs entirely in black maidenhair fern stems. Tag: "NW Calif". Second tag "53". Third tag "Klamath R. Tribes att.". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined woman's basket hat. Crossed warp starting knot, indented. The warp material is probably hazel (Corylus cornuta californica). The weft material is conifer root (Pinophyta). The weft overlay design has a beargrass (Xerophyllum tenax) background with maidenhair fern (Adiantum pedatum) designs. Starting at the starting knot, there is three strand twining for 1/2 inch, followed by 1 1/4 inches of plain twining, followed by one weft row of three strand twining. Plain twining continues to 1/2 inch below the rim where there is one weft row of three strand twining. The rim is trimmed. The main design is a horizontal band with triangles inside, above, and below the band. The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right slant of weft twist. The workface is on the exterior. The overlay is single-sided, with the design on the exterior. The basket is from Northwestern California, possibly Hupa or Yurok based on the area of collection.
Hearst Museum object titled Hopper, accession number 1-20843, described as Twined basket hopper. Paper tag "Klamath R. Tribes Att." Brass tag "13". Second paper tag "NW Calif". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined basket mortar hopper, probably used. The warp material is reddish, with some remaining bark, but unknown. The background weft is conifer root (Pinophyta) as well as a few wefts of unknown material at the base. The weft overlay is beargrass. At the base there is 1 inch of plain twining, over 1-2 rods, followed by 4 weft rows of three strand twining, followed by two weft rows of lattice twining, followed by 1.5 inches of plain twining. After that there are two weft rows of lattice twining, followed by plain twining to the rim. The rim consists of braided warps, bound down on the interior; the warps are trimmed nearly flush with the rim. The rim has a reinforcing rod on the interior. The design is comprised of two solid bands of beargrass (Xerophyllum tenax). The basket has an exterior workface with a rightward work direction. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist. The overlay is primarily on the outside. The basket is from Northwestern California.
Hearst Museum object titled Plaque, accession number 1-20835, described as Small basketry. Tag "Klamath R. Tribes Att.". Second metal tag "277". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined basket plaque. The basket has a crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is probably hazel (Corylus cornuta californica). The background weft is conifer root (Pinophyta; though according to Ruth Merrill the weft is Grape root, Vitus californica). The weft overlay is beargrass (Xerophyllum tenax) and maidenhair fern (Adiantum). At the starting knot there is 1 inch of three strand twining, followed by plain twining to the rim. The main design is three horizontal bands of triangles, forming a flower-like design. The basket has a rightward work direction. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist. The overlay is primarily one-sided. The basket is possibly Wiyot, based on the extensive use of black in the design, and its provenience of Humboldt County.
