Hearst Museum object titled Bowl basket, accession number 1-27686, described as Close twined, bowl shaped, band at top, 3 narrow bands of openwork. Tag "N.W. Calif". Second tag "Klamath R. Tribes Att.". Per Ralph Shanks: Closed twined bowl with one row of openwork. Cross warp starting knot. The warp material is either hazel or willow. The background weft is conifer root. The weft overlay is beargrass as well as a material with red bark. There is three strand twining at the starting knot for one inch. This is followed by two inches of plain twining, followed by two rows of three strand twining, separated by one row of plain twining. This is followed by plain twining until two inches below the rim, where a rod is added using lattice twining, followed by one weft row of three strand twining. This is followed by 1inch of plain twining, after which is a 1/2 inch of open work, followed by three weft rows of plain twining. The rim is formed by the warps which were looped together at the end and possibly more material was added. There are weft four rows of beargrass overlay, one of which also has the unknown red material. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist. The work direction is to the right. The workface is on the exterior. The weft overlay is primarily one sided. The basket is from Northwestern California, or possibly Southern Humboldt Athabaskan.
