Hearst Museum object titled Nut, accession number 5-15734a-c, described as (a) Water carrier, coconut seed pod, double chambered; with fiber carrying rope; 2 cm. perforations for filling and emptying at top. Length ca. 28.0 cm. Width ca. 25.0 cm. (b) and (c) coconut fiber plugs for holes. Length of each 6.0 cm. The female palm tree produces a double coconut resembling the female pudenda, earlier thought to be an aphrodisiac. It was believed to be the product of submarine tree, hence it’s name “Coco de Mer.” This seed pod was purchased from a fisherman, used in his pirogue.
