Hearst Museum object titled Mug with lid, accession number 9-23941a,b, described as Enamel mug with lid. Silhouettes of red flags are stenciled around the bottom third of the white mug. An inscription in black indicates that the mug was made as a memorial gift for the Kunming office of “Kun 901 troops”, made 17 October 1969 (昆字九0一部队驻昆办事处 一九六九.十.十七制). The red inscription above reads: Be united to strive for greater victories (团结起来 争取更大的胜利。Tuanjie qilai zhengqu gengda de shengli). A red line encircles the rim which has a black bowstring. RMB 45

Building are at the foot of a terraced hillside. The reverse is inscribed in green, all under a pale blue rim. The design probably refers “up to the hills, down to the countryside” (上山下乡 shangshan xiaxiang), a movement to send youth out of the cities.
