Inscription: “Lake brilliance, mountain color” (湖光山色 Huguang shanse). Rubber kiln seal stamped on foot: “Painted by Hu Yanxing” (胡炎興繪 Hu Yanxing hui)

A straw hat is inscribed: “The People’s Commune is Good” (人民公社好renmin gongshe hao). The reverse side has a slogan on an open book: “Read Chairman Mao’s work, listen to Chairman Mao’s words, in work follow Chairman Mao’s directives” (读毛主席的书，听毛主席的话，照毛主席的指示办事 du Mao zhuxi de shu, ting Mao zhuxi de hua, zhao Mao zhuxi de zhishi banshi). A decorative blue decal surrounds the rim.

Hearst Museum object titled Teacup, accession number 9-23502, described as The body has a green decal of a landscape of peak and pine accompanied by an inscription. The same inscription repeats on the reverse side in clerical script (lishu). A decorative blue decal around rim imitates the lacy designs of Soviet wares. Inscription: The vista is boundless at the precipitous peak (無限風光在險峰wuxian fengguang zai xianfeng). No kiln mark.

The reverse displays a quote on an open-book from a poem by Mao Zedong: China’s daughters have high-aspiring minds /They love their battle array, not silks and satins (中华儿女多奇志，不爱红装爱武装zhonghua ernu duo qizhi, buai hongzhuang ai wuzhuang). The book rests on wheat and hammer, symbols for peasants and workers. A decorative blue decal surrounds the rim.
