Hearst Museum object titled Altar surround, accession number 9-15483, described as Lined, shaped piece; linen, silk, ink; satin weave, plain weave, satin embroidery stitch, couching, ink tinting; white ground, natural lining, multicolored, gold metallic; 27 by 46 3/4 inches; lined, shaped piece like an upside-down "U" or an arch with square outside corners. White satin embroidered with a beautiful variety of clouds, 2 dragons and 2 medallions. Satin stitch, couching and ink tint on dragon. Multicolored and gold metallic.
Image Missing: Hearst Museum object titled Container, netsuke and bead, accession number 9-12545a-c, described as Inro, netsuke, and ojime: The inro is a long wide lacquer box w/ wide oval shape base. Five nesting sections. Gold lacquer ground w/ light relief decor. of flying cranes, a tortoise w/ weed tail (minogame), some rocks, and on the other side a gnarled pine tree, and branches of plum blossoms. The cranes, tortoise, pine tree and rocks are symbols of longevity. Plum added for beauty. Interiors of sections are entirely of speckled gold. Cord guides raised. (a) The dull, rather flat gold ground is of fine powdered gold sprinkled upon the wet lacquer (fundame) The pine tree, and boughs in light relief is of duller sprinkled gold powder (hiramaki-e) highlighted by brighter gold detail and small inlaid rectangles of gold foil on the trunk. (okibarame style). The plum blossoms are of unpolished black lacquer (hana-nuri). The cranes of dull chestnut-brown lacquer (kuri-uro-urushi). The tortise [tortoise], in higher relief, worn and showing red lacquer base. The interior of sections covered entirely by coarse gold sprinkles on black ground and covered by red tinted overcoat of transparent lacquer. (nashiji). The entire inro is worn w/ many small cracks and chips. Some of the gold foil is peeling off. (b) netsuke has large crack. (c) ojime has metal lining of cord holds. The Netsuke (b): large ivory carving representing Fukurokujiu god of longevity. He is standing w/ a child, hold- fan in 1 hand and staff in other. Has large ears, full beard, and elongated head. Medalion [medallion], checkerboard & cloud patterns on garment. Signature on base. + The ojime (c) is a carved ivory bead w/ detailed dragon in sky. L. (a) 9cm. (b) 7.7cm. Dia. (c): 2cm. Hearst Museum object titled Netsuke, accession number 9-12552, described as Pipe holder: carved bone, long and narrow. Light relief decoration with incised detail depicts five insects on each side. One side has snail with coral inlaid antennae, wasp with jade eyes and mother of pearl wings (one missing), cricket with jade head, Praying mantis with incised mother-of-pearl belly and yellow shell eyes, and a beetle w/ coral and shell. Other side depicts a slug, locust, dragon fly, bee, and butterfly. each with inlaid eyes. Butterfly has tortoise shell wings. Interior hollowed out for pipe. Cord hole on side L. 20 cm.

White ground, pale gold, orange, green, blue, black, and silver, off-white lining.  Pieces, lined rectangle of silk brocade, white satin ground w. floral and phoenix motif in pale gold, orange, green, blue, black, silver, off-white china silk lining, 2 loops attached to wrong side.  Soiled, badly damaged in some areas by moths.  Mended.  81 inches by 47½ inches.
