Hearst Museum object titled Plaque, accession number 1-28154, described as Twined basketry tray. Grimy from use, moldy. Plain-twined. 3-strand twining: 3 rows from start, 3 rows about 2 cm from start, 1 row 5.5-7 cm from start. White overlay, single-faced; circular bands of designs. Tag: "Nongatl". Per Ralph Shanks: Flat circular twined basket tray with food residue. Crossed warp starting knot. Probably willow or hazel warps and conifer root wefts, with a beargrass overlay design. Starting at the starting knot there is three rows of three strand twining, followed by 3/4 inch of plain twining over two warps, followed by plain twining over one warp for 1 1/4, followed by one weft row of three strand twining, followed by 1/2 inch of plain twining, followed by one weft row of three strand twining, followed by 1/2 inch of plain twining. The rim is trimmed. The design is primarily alternating beargrass and conifer root. The overlay is single-sided with the overlay on the workface. The workface is on the side with the labels. The basket has a rightward work direction and an up to the right slant of weft twist.

Hoop at rim has come unstitched in several places; top surface of tray is very grimy from use, moldy; bottom side is in fairly good condition; design is clear. Overlay design, mostly single-faced; white and alder red; circular stripes and bands give the effect of one starburst within another. Tag "Nongatl". Per Ralph Shanks: Flat circular twined basket tray with residue on both faces, possibly used as a serving tray. Crossed warp starting knot, slightly indented, slightly dissimilar to Northwestern California starting knots. Probably willow or hazel warps and conifer root wefts, with a beargrass and red-dyed woodwardia overlay design. Starting at the starting knot there is five rows of three strand twining, followed by 1/2 inch of plain twining over two warps, followed by plain twining over one warp for 3 1/2 inches, followed by openwork parallel warps for 1/2 inch, followed by two weft rows of plain twining. The two weft rows at the rim are wrapped with a rod inside the wrapping. The design is primarily two horizontal bands of woodwardia triangles interspersed with six horizontal single weft rows of woodwardia. The rim wrapping is alternating woodwardia and beargrass. The overlay is single-sided with the overlay on the workface with a few weft stitches of beargrass on the back face. The workface is on the opposite side of the labels. The basket has a rightward work direction and an up to the right slant of weft twist.
