Hearst Museum object titled Basketry cap, accession number 1-27174, described as Basketry cap.  Twined.  Triangles in white and maidenhair fern. Three tags "92", "Klamath R. Tribes Att." "Squaw Cap Klamath lev [?] Calif". Per Ralph Shanks:  Woman’s twined basket hat.  Crossed warp starting knot.  The warp material is possibly hazel.  The background wefts are conifer root.  The weft overlay is beargrass, a black dyed material-possibly dyed confer root, and maidenhair fern.  Starting at the starting knot is 1/2 inch of three strand twining, followed by 1.5 inches of plain twining.  After that, there is one weft row of three strand twining.  Plain twining continues to 1/2 inch below the rim where there is another weft row of three strand twining.  After that plain twining continues to the end of the rim, which is trimmed.  The design background is conifer root.  Starting at the starting knot there is a half of an inch of conifer root with no overlay.  The basket has multiple horizontal one weft rows comprised of maidenhair fern.  A sun/flower pattern is formed by beargrass triangles at the start.  The main design is formed by a several elements comprised of a triangle surrounded by smaller triangles.   The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The workface is on the exterior, with a rightward work direction.  The overlay is only on the exterior.  The basket is from Northwestern California, possibly Wiyot.  The Wiyot and peoples South of them were known to dye conifer root as seen in this basket.

The main design is formed by pairs of stacked parallelograms with beargrass triangles on the interior.    The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The workface is on the exterior, with a rightward work direction.  The overlay is only on the exterior.  The basket is from Northwestern California.

Per Ralph Shanks:  Twined woman's basket hat.  Crossed warp starting knot, indented. The warp material is probably hazel. The weft material is conifer root.  The weft overlay design has a red-dyed woodwardia background with maidenhair fern and beargrass designs.  The last weft row is tied with string at the end.  Starting at the starting knot, there is three strand twining for 1/2 inch, followed by 1 inch of plain twining, followed by one weft row of three strand twining.  Plain twining continues to 3/4 inch below the rim where there is one weft row of three strand twining.  The rim is trimmed.  The main design is three elements comprised of a stepped slash outlined by five triangles on each side.  The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The workface is on the exterior.  The overlay is primarily single-sided, with the design on the exterior.  The basket is from Northwestern California, based on the extensive use of red-dyed woodwardia the basket could be Karuk.  There is a hair woven in near the rim.

Per Ralph Shanks:  Twined woman's basket hat.  Large crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is possibly willow. The weft material is conifer root.  The weft overlay background is beargrass with maidenhair fern and red-dyed woodwardia designs.  Starting at the starting knot, there is three strand twining for .25 inch, followed by 1.5 inches of plain twining, followed by one weft row of three strand twining.  Plain twining continues to three weft rows from the rim, where there is one weft row of three strand twining.  The rim is trimmed, with warp sticks sticking out beyond the rim.  The main design is diagonal woodwardia slashes in between two maidenhair fern bands.  The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The workface is on the exterior.  The overlay is single-sided with some overlay on the backface, with the main design on the exterior.  The basket is from Northwestern California, possibly one of the Athabaskan groups from that area such as the Whilkut or Nongatl.  The wefts vary in size.  There are two hairs woven into the basket.

A third tag is torn off. Per Ralph Shanks: Twined woman's basket hat. Crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is probably hazel or willow. The weft material is conifer root, which is also the design background. The weft overlay is beargrass. Starting at the starting knot, there is three strand twining for ⅓ inch, followed by 1 inch of plain twining, followed by one weft row of three strand twining. Plain twining continues to 0.5 inch from the rim where there is one weft row of three strand twining. The rim is trimmed. The main design is several sets of three stacked triangles above and below two horizontal lines. The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right slant of weft twist. The workface is on the exterior. The overlay is mostly single-sided, with the design on the exterior. The basket is from Northwestern California, possibly from the Southern Humboldt Athabaskan area based on the overlay on the interior and the design layout.

Starting at the starting knot is 1/2 inch of three strand twining, followed by 1.75 inches of plain twining.  After that, there is one weft row of three strand twining.  Plain twining continues to 1/2 inch below the rim where there is another weft row of three strand twining.  After that plain twining continues to the end of the rim, which is trimmed.  The design background overlay is beargrass.   At the start there are two weft rows of woodwardia alternating with beargrass.  The next design is a horizontal row of woodwardia triangles.  The main design elements are three sets comprised of two triangles, which are upside down and two right triangles.   There is also a filler element similar in a shape to a less than symbol. That is followed by another horizontal row of woodwardia triangles.  At the rim are three sets of two geometric designs as well as one filler element of four slashes.  The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The workface is on the exterior, with a rightward work direction.  The overlay is on the exterior, with some pattern coming through to the other side.  The basket is from Northwestern California.
