Hearst Museum object titled Bowl basket, accession number 1-20844, described as Small, twined basket with black and white design. "NW Cal att". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined basket bowl. The basket probably has a crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is possibly hazel (Corylus cornuta californica). The background weft is conifer root (Pinophyta). The weft design overlay is beargrass (Xerophyllum tenax) and a red and black fern. At the starting knot there is a .5 inch of three strand twining. After that .25 inch of plain twining followed by .25 inch of three strand twining. After that plain twining continues until the rim where there is one weft row of three strand twining. The design at the base is two bands of beargrass. On the side is a horizontal band of vertical rods of alternating beargrass and fern. The design is mirrored on the interior of the basket. The basket base has an undulating surface. The basket has an exterior workface with a rightward work direction. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist. The overlay is on the outside and inside. The basket is from Northeast California, based on the use double sided overlay for all of the designs. The basket may be Wintu.
