Hearst Museum object titled Bowl basket, accession number 1-72938, described as Coiled, bowl-shaped; brown designs; 3-rod foundation. Three tags "63 Maidu [Maidu added later perhaps] Shoemaker". The second on the base "26" in large writing with "29" in the upper right corner. The last tag just has the catalog number. Per Ralph Shanks: Flaring basket bowl, coiled. Foundation is three-rod willow. The background material is willow. The design material is bracken fern root. The designs include a repeating pattern of seven sets of two vertical zigzags and four vertical triangles on a line. The basket has an oval start. The basket has an exterior workface and is woven in a leftward work direction with non-interlocking stitches. The weft fag ends are clipped as well as sometimes hidden. The rim is plain wrapped with a tapered coil ending. The leftward work direction, the non-interlocking stitches, and the design pattern make this likely to be a Paiute basket.
