Hearst Museum object titled Mug, accession number 9-23896, described as Enamel mug. The front features a stenciled decoration of the red Tiananmen Gate and a blue dove above. The back features a long inscription that includes a slogan in the middle: Safeguard Motherland, safeguard peace (保衛祖國 保衛和平Baowei zuguo baowei heping). The rest states that the mug was a gift to heroes of the People’s Liberation Army, presented by the Representatives of the People of China in sympathy with the People’s Liberation Army. The top of the body is decorated with a ring of auspicious pattern in sky blue. Cobalt blue bowstring decorates the rim. The handle is partially decorated in the same color.

Guard home, defend the country (抗美援朝 保家衛國Kang Mei yuan Chao baojia weiguo). On the back is a red inscription indicating that the mug was presented to the soldiers of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), here referred as “the most endearing people” (最可愛的人Zui keai de ren). The top of the body is decorated with a ring of reserved dove pattern in sky blue. It was a gift from the Representatives of the People of China visiting Korea in sympathy of the PLA. Cobalt blue bowstring decorates the rim. The handle is partially decorated in the same color.

The army-green ground is stenciled in yellow with a quotation from Mao Zedong, ending with “Concern yourselves with the Country’s great affairs; carry the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution through to the end” (你們要关心国家大事,要把无产阶级文化大革命进行到底 Yao ba wuchan jieji wenhua dageming jinxing daodi), followed by Mao’s signature. The painting shows a bird’s-eye view of a garden with multiple pavilions surrounded by walls and a small pleasure boat on a pond. The inscription identifies it as Hundred Flowers Islets (百花洲Baihua zhou) in Jiangxi province.
