Hearst Museum object titled Mug, accession number 9-23932, described as Enamel mug. The white ground is stenciled with blue wave patterns along the bottom and pink pigment along the top. On the upper body is a red inscription: “Sailing the sea depends on the helmsman, making revolution depends on Mao Zedong Thought (大海航行靠舵手 干革命靠毛泽东思想Dahai hangxing kao duoshou gan geming kao Mao Zedong Sixiang). Seal on foot: “The Masses Beijing Daily Use Enamel Factory, February 1969” (大众 北京市日用搪瓷厂69. 2. 5 Dazhong Beijing shi riyong tangci chang).Blue bowstring decorates the rim. Condition: Minor enamel loss, otherwise in good condition.

Hearst Museum object titled Mug, accession number 9-23904, described as Enamel mug. The front is stenciled with an oval image of a train running on a bridge through a mountainous region. The reverse features a red inscription, stating that the mug was made by the Newly Established Central Construction Bureau of the Railway Administration, No. 6 Construction Bureau, in commemoration of the opening of the Baoji-Chengdu route. Cobalt blue bowstring decorates the rim. The handle is partially decorated in black.

A red inscription spray painted on white ground indicates that the mug was a gift following the victory of the defense of the Chinese border with Vietnam. “Fighting back in self-defense; Protecting the border. Remembering Victory. Presented by the Central Relief Organization, March, 1979 (自衛还击,保卫边疆 胜利纪念 中央慰問団贈 一九七九年三月Ziwei huanji, baowei bianjiang. Shengli jinian. Zhongyang weiwentuan zeng. Yijiuqijiu nian san yue). Tiananmen gate is stenciled on the opposite side. Identical stencils, front and back, on 112 above.

The white ground is stenciled with a red inscription: Learn from the working class (向工人阶级学习 Xiang gongren jieji xuexi). Framed on the top and the bottom by an abstract auspicious pattern and a panoramic scene of factories, both in orange. Blue bowstring decorates the rim.

The golden monument stands in Tiananmen Square above a sea of red flags. Splashes of blue pigment suggest a clear sky. On the right a red inscription reads: “Carry the Revolution through to the end” (将革命进行到底Jiang geming jinxing daodi). Black bowstring decorates the rim. Cf. same legend on mug 10 and enamel tray of closely similar design.

The white ground is decorated with the Red Book: Quotations from Mao, accompanied by a rifle and golden wheat tassel inside a brown cog, symbolizing the Worker-Farmer-Soldier Alliance. On the right there is a red inscription: Be united, alert, earnest and active (团结 紧张 严肃 活泼Tuanjie jinzhang yansu huopo). Black bowstring decorates the rim.

The back features a long inscription that includes a slogan in the middle: Safeguard Motherland, safeguard peace (保衛祖國 保衛和平Baowei zuguo baowei heping). The rest states that the mug was a gift to heroes of the People’s Liberation Army, presented by the Representatives of the People of China in sympathy with the People’s Liberation Army. The top of the body is decorated with a ring of auspicious pattern in sky blue. Cobalt blue bowstring decorates the rim. The handle is partially decorated in the same color.

The white ground is stenciled with a red inscription: “Be like Chairman Mao’s good cadre, comrade Men He” (向毛主席的好干部门合同志学习 Xiang Mao Zhuxi de hao ganbu Men He Tongzhi xuexi). A model of loyalty, Men He (门合 1928-1967) wrote in his diary: ‘All of my thoughts are for Chairman Mao, all of my actions are in service of Chairman Mao. All of my movements follow Chairman Mao closely. All that I do is for Chairman Mao’ 一切想着毛主席、一切服从毛主席、一切紧跟毛主席、一切为着毛主席. Above the inscription are red pine needles against a yellow background.
