Hearst Museum object titled Black-and-white negative, accession number 15-30533, described as 4 x 5" Black and white negative of a statue of Hanuman next to a road. Hoefler's original description: "Gwalior State, Central India. Throughout India, along its highways and byways, are shrines, erected to different gods. The traveler soon becomes accustomed to seeing, on every hand, the images of the monkey god, the elephant god and numerous others. The picture shows two small shrines erected to the monkey god, Hanuman, who enjoys a wide following over the whole of India. Images of Hanuman are to be found in most temples, as well as in public places. In those provinces where there are many followers of Vishnu, a person can scarcely move a yard without coming across an image of this beloved god.

Gwalior has a department of archeology, officials of which are going to great pains in collecting and preserving the antiquities of the State." Hearst Museum object titled Black-and-white negative, accession number 15-30522, described as 8 x 10" Black and white negative of the larger of the San Bahu Temples. Hoefler's original description: "Gwalior State, Central India. The larger of the San Bahu Temples, called the Mother-in-law. From a Sanskrit inscription on the porch of this Temple we learn that it was completed in 1093 A. D., during the Reign of Mahipala, a Rajput Prince of Gwalior. This Temple was sacred to Vishnu, one of the three gods of the Hindu Trinity. Although the building is only partly preserved, it is a most interesting specimen of the ornate style of medieval temple architecture in Northern India." Verso: Prints Supplied To: Hills Brothers.

The amount of labor lavished upon temples in India is well illustrated in this photograph which gives a close-up view of carvings on the Jagannath Temple in Udaipur. This large Temple is covered from the ground to the top with carvings depicting Hindu mythological legends and religious themes. This particular view shows a great many dancing girls, probably symbolizing, inasmuch as this is the temple to the are god, that women, especially dancing girls, have something to do with war."
