Hearst Museum object titled Tunic, accession number 9-16588, described as Vest/tunic, long; brown silk heavily embroidered; 5-toed dragon in gold thread at base of each panel above waves and triangular designs;  along edges are phoenix, crane, bats and cloud designs; peony below neck opening; 3 "frog" closures; chest area unadorned; macrame and varicolored tassels w/metal ornaments at base; lower half of back missing.  Silk, varicolored embroidery in silk and metallic threads; macrame; silk tassels; metal ornaments; silk lining.  China attr.  According to Mary Hays this is a so-called "court vest" worn by Chinese women (not to court, however, for they were forbidden there).  the chest area would properly be adorned with a mandarin square on either side, indicating rank.  46.5 cm. across shoulders, l. not incl. fringe 88 cm.
